A Catholic’s Guide to Ghosts is a 68-page issue of The Margins about the Catholic theology of ghosts, the invisible world, and three very strange encounters between saints and the dead.
We believe in one God, the maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
But what does that actually mean?
This issue takes a look at the Catholic understanding of the invisible world, and then goes a little further. Much further, actually.
Inside:
All Things Visible and Invisible
A short exploration of the Catholic theology of the unseen, including St. Thomas Aquinas’ belief that souls from Heaven, Purgatory, and even Hell may appear to the living by God’s permission.
The Soul from Heaven
St. Thomas Aquinas is visited by his departed friend, Brother Romanus, who appears to him in the night.
The Soul from Purgatory
Padre Pio encounters a mysterious man by the fireplace who claims he died in the friary and has come asking for prayers.
The Soul from Hell
Bl. Richard of Saint Anne has a strange night out with a friend, says his nightly Hail Marys, and receives an apparition that will change the course of his life.
Each story is a faithful but fictionalized retelling of a traditional Catholic account, followed by a short reflection on what the apparition reveals about Heaven, Purgatory, Hell, prayer, mercy, and the strange ways God can draw us toward Himself.
Plus: strange traditional art, a little advice for what to do if you actually see a ghost, a prayer for the departed, and a few more things that go bump in the night.
